Well..... It's DEFINATELY Eminem... The song- hmmm- Im not sure.... Dont have my Hip-Hop Anthology handy... Is it "I never knew..."?
I am not saying the Eminem is not great rap, but I am not sure it would be consider old school.
When you look at rock, the late 1950's, the 1960's, and maybe some of the 1970's are considered oldies. For the most part the rest of the 70's, the 80's and 90's are referred to by decade. Now I am not saying this is the best way to go about it, but it is what we are used to.
Enminem, Dre, Wu Tang and many many other great rap groups of the late 90's need to be recognized but I believe we need to come up with another term.
The term old school I think should be reserved for songs, and performers who accomplished most of their work in the 80's which is really like raps infancy, and we can, as a group decide on a term for the next time period of rap (childhood/adolescence of the late 90's and first year or two of the new millenium). What does everyone think about that?
I view it as old school because it's off Em's first album, which I must admit is a stretch, but I'll take what I can get.
I'm saddened and sorry to say that of the three you've listed, Em doesn't apply to the group. However Dr. Dre, whether it's Dre with N.W.A. or The Chronic, that's over 15 years ago.
Same thing can be said for Wu-Tang, especially anything off 36 Chambers.
I understand your argument and clearly, you have strong legs to stand on. But to the kids of today, Em's first album is old. They would stare at you strangly if you talked about groups like Black Moon, Lords of the Underground or Black Sheep and the period of rap that you speak of, what we considered old school, would be considered antique.
Do you think anyone watching MTV today has ever heard of EPMD, Boogie Down Productions or Kid-n-Play?
I mean, do you even think they've seen House Party?
I stick by my assertion that Em is a stretch, but I think anything over a decade old is fair game.
