2009 QB Rankings, Preseason

We did this twice last year and it is back. We will do a preseason, midseason and end of the season ranking for all QB’s who start a game in the league. We have both Brady Quinn and Derek Anderson on this list because Eric Mangini doesn’t want to name a starter. Again, these are Ron DeBlasio’s rankings exclusively and are his intellectual property. Before people start screaming about the first name you will see, remember the Favre pick is career based. The guy is a no doubt, first ballot hall of famer, all time great and even if he played until he was 90 (which he might) he would always be in the highest category. Two interesting things to note, he is buying the Aaoron Rodgers kool aid, but is down on Matt Schaub, interesting!

ELITE- Brett Favre, Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, Ben Roethlisberger

ABOVE AVERAGE- Eli Manning, Donovan McNabb, Matt Ryan, Jay Cutler, Aaron Rodgers, Kurt Warner, Joe Flacco, Philip Rivers, Drew Brees

AVERAGE- Tony Romo, Byron Leftwich, Matt Stafford, Mark Sanchez, Matt Hasselback, Chad Pennington, Kerry Collins, Carson Palmer

TERRIBLE- Jason Campbell, Jake Delhomme, Mark Bulger, Matt Cassel

THIGPEN- Shaun Hill, Trent Edwards, David Garrard, Matt Schaub, Brady Quinn, Derek Anderson, JaMarcus Russel, Kyle Orton

No offense to Mr. D, but I don't care what Favre did in his glory years. Today he is simply not an elite QB. He hasn't been for several years.

Other than that, the only thing I'd change would be moving Drew Brees to Elite (he's been putting up sick numbers for years now, it's not a fluke) and move Kerry Collins to terrible.

Well you can argue with the big guy about the Favre thing.

As for moving Brees you know I am guy who wants QBs to get W's not just put up numbers. Bress is 55-51 and 2 playoff berths (1-2) in 7 years as a starter just doesn't butter the biscuit for me. And as a person I love Drew Brees and wish we had more athletes like him.

The Yancey thing was a joke.

Kurt Warner doesn't belong in the same category as Joe Flacco. I would make a category between "elite" and "above average" for Warner and maybe McNabb. I would call it "really good".

If the "elite" category means those guys are a lock for the HOF then I can't argue with Favre.

The most out of place qb on the list other than Schaub is David Garrard who might be the most underrated qb in the league. I agree with the King that the Above Avg needs to be broken up. Is the criteria talent or proven success? Romo also belongs in a higher tier than Matt Stafford as does Delhomme and Campbell.
